Farmer’s Wife QAL: Golda

Hello! So.. it’s my week in the Farmer’s Wife QAL bloghop (hosted by Kerry) and I’m here to show you block 38 Golda!

P1130345-001As soon as I saw this block I loved it! There are a lot of pieces but surprisingly it came together really quickly and almost perfect. It took me a long time to decide on fabric and in the end I steered away from the 30s pastels as in my other blocks and went for DS (Denyse Schmidt). Here’s hoping it will fit in the overall quilt πŸ™‚ Although my choices later have been a bit bolder from my collection…

The letter for this block is “So Quiet and Peaceful”, basically it’s a story about a family who moved from their farm to the city. Day to day life become easier, they had money and playtime. Then the depression hit, jobs were cut, wages went down, city life became unsupportable so they went back home- to the farm and wondered why they ever let. The simplest of messages conveyed.

With everything that’s been happening I’m not completely up to date with the QAL but when I work on the blocks I find pairs are best! Choose fabrics in pairs, prep in pairs and sew in pairs. The majority of mine are machine sewn as foundation piecing is not my favourite! A couple are in pieces as attempting hand piecing but not finished those yet…. oops!

I rotary cut all my pieces and I guess my main tip to those is a 28mm rotary cutter- it’s so much more easier on those little pieces! I tend to cut the fabric slightly bigger than the pattern and stack in 4s, then I add a bit of double sided tape to the back of the pattern and lay it on top of the fabric to cut. I find it’s minimalises cutting errors for me πŸ™‚

P1130336-001As I work in pairs- block 37 Georgia is keeping Golda company. I couldn’t resist using the red DS print again- hoping this might lead to a more cohesive quilt.

P1130340-001And… here we go a choice offering of some of my blocks and the style.. I’m finding that the fabric choices are like picking out my mood at the time. The pastelly ones are from when all I wanted is to be left alone and some quiet πŸ™‚ Now it’s bright, bold and raring to go.

How is everyone getting on with theirs?

Finding my feet… again

It’s been annoying busy around these parts lately! Especially with car trouble which meant no car for about a week… and some secret sewing that can’t be shown yet πŸ™‚

Anyway in general I’m happy with actually getting some sewing done. First up is my first sewtogether bag this year. I did three just before Christmas and had forgotten a couple of steps. This one is a birthday present for a friend and also a belated thank you present for putting me up a couple of nights last summer.

Stupidly I forgot to link up with the Finish A Long Q1 but I be back soon with my Q2 list and some other bits to show… plus I am SO looking forward to something that be arriving next week !

Eek it’s March..

… I am still here and thought it’s about time I provided you with an update!

It’s been rather busy between work, family stuff and everyone laden with viruses but I have slowly been sewing… even though sometimes I wanted to throw the machine out of the window for misbehaving.Centre Triangles Hexagon

This is one of my favourite things at the moment! Trianges and hexies πŸ™‚ It’s my centre for a Round Robin bee but I definitely see a proper quilt coming like it soon!Churndash Block Stacked Rainbow Block

Some bee blocks (Churn Dash and Stacked Rainbows) for the Fat Stash Uk beeHexiefriends EPP flowers

And to complete my hexie craze I’ve joined in with the #hexiefriends phenomena on Instagram where you swap a flower with each other and the centre has your name and location. How cool will that be??

I’ve a few more things to show.. so later this week when I feel a bit more on top of things.

2015 Finish Along Q1 Goals

It’s that time of year again to declare some “finish” aims. Finish Along 2015 has jumped from Katy over to Adrianne. I think in the last quarter I put too much on myself so going to try and be a bit more realistic (yeah right?!) Especially since going back to work this work meant spending the past couple of days in a zombified stupor so………

NY Beauty Geese1. This needs to be finished by the 16th.. it’s for my partner in the Schnitzel and Boo mini swap. Last minute (aka sunday) I changed my mind on my original idea and going for this. I’m not overly keen on the rainbow palette so going for brights… the geese and spiky bits are all cut out..

Country Girls Tasha Noel Great Granny2. Granny Square quilt with Country Girls fabric. It’s all cut out waiting to be sewn. This was meant to be my sewing time before work this week if only I got up instead of dozing until well after my alarm.

3-5. As seen here the Harper Quilt, Oliver’s playmat and Farryn’s Quilt needs to be finished. The Harper quilt is all pieced and made the blocks (Georgina) for the back.. Farryn’s quilt pieced but Oliver’s hum not much progress……….. Oops and the children are now five months, nine months and eighteen months. Although to be fair I’ve set a habit of giving quilts on the second birthday πŸ˜‰

Seal6. My Seal quilt… the photo above something like that.. This is of a wild seal on the beach down Godrevy a couple of weeks ago. The tide was in so most of the seals were near the cliff. this particular male had clamored over a lot of rocks!

The only thing I have to decide is pixels or applique… then start πŸ™‚

I also have some toys (Phil the monkey, Owl and Dragon) to finish, a couple of sewtogether bags and a Sidekick Tote for me with Linen and woodland fabrics. Plus the Ukminiswap and also in my head is a whimsical woodland animal quilt with triangles but next time eh?

So… are you planning any finishes this quarter? Linking up with On the Windy Side.

Angles and the IGMini Swap

Isn’t it interesting how different our brains work? How something one way your brain can’t cope with very well turn it around and it’s something you instantly love! This happened to me on the IGMini Swap.

A month ago I received a customs demand for over Β£20 for something from the USA. This did not happen at a good time being almost Christmas etc but it turned out it was my IGMini! I waited til payday before paying the ransom and then it arrived…

IG Mini Swap 30s repro mini sampler (2)

IG Mini Swap 30s repro mini sampler (3)Look at all those goodies and 30s fabrics! Normally I’m not a sampler person but I just loved the look of this and that’s the way it will be going on my wall. Once I fiddle with the hanging tab- the creator the lovely SewAggie originally intended it to be hung with those lone squares at the top but to my brain it is more appealing to have the pattern dance from left to right and I just love the fact there are hexies in there!

IG Mini Swap 30s repro mini sampler (1)And… just look at that quilting! Superb!

IG Mini Swap EPP Diamonds (2)My partner was barely on Instagram and didn’t give much away in clues mostly that she liked blue. She had already done a few patterns I had in mind so in the end I decided on EPP some diamonds in a rotating star pattern. I spent ages dithering over the binding and as I was too scared to try an invisible binding with all those edges I opted for a normal one. Which now to me it detracts from the design a little too much! It is slightly handquilted in the centre and the rest machine quilted.

I FMQ the hell out of that basket there too πŸ™‚ Plus it’s one more thing ticked off my FAL Q4 list!

I now need to spend some time fiddling with minis on the wall- how do you do yours? I’ve tried some tape but it keeps falling down and wary of pushpins as they will leave holes in the fabric.

Little Quilts Swap

So.. a few months ago Sarah Fielke organised a mini quilt swap from the book she cowrote with Amy Lobsiger. I couldn’t resist and signed up!

My partner liked colour and so after a bit of thought I decided on the Fans of May pattern from the book and eventually ended up with this…..

Little Quilts Fans of May FMQ (1)It is one of my favourite quilts from last year and at times it was tough- who knew that ric rac melts and I dislike how much of a mess woolen fabric leaves! I was also naughty and deviated from the pattern slightly by adding buttons to the fans but I thought it looked better and helped to hide the odd foundation piecing mistake!

Little Quilts Fans of May FMQ (2) Little Quilts Fans of May FMQ (3)After doing Sarah’s class at the West Country Quilt Show I practiced my FMQ on the border and the basket gift.Long way to go yet fmq wise but at least it’s a step in the right direction!

It’s also one thing ticked off my FAL Q4 list too!

Little QuiltsThis is what I received from my partner isn’t it lovely? I’ve been oohing and aahing over the pattern in that book and the little pouch and extras are cute!

Unfortunately I don’t think my partner had much experience with foundation piecing before as there are a few mishaps- the points are quite far away meeting up and there’s an exposed seam.I’ve done a fair bit of foundation piecing this week so will share those projects and tips/comments on the technique soon.

But I do love the fabric and am grateful she put all the effort into making this after all that’s what counts and trying new things! But… what to do with it? What do others do with mini quilts if they aren’t on the wall?

Happy Holidays

I hope everyone has had a good Christmas and enjoying some time off! As usual I was still finishing off a couple of gifts right up til boxing day ooops.

This is the quickest quilt I ever made… technically the border and backing fabric (the same blue fleur de lils) did not arrive until Monday. I’m so in love with that fabric think I need to order more to turn into a dress but which dress??

P1110440

I knew there was a reason I never tried a panel before… the quilting is awful. I tried bobbinline for the first time so not sure if it was that or tension issues combined with my poor basting skills but it was a struggle getting it through the machine stitches were off and weird.

But… the recipient loved it! A 26 year old eeyore mad sister in law πŸ™‚ I even finishedΒ  a parisian themed sew together bag for the mother in law.. sadly considering it was finished ten minutes after we needed to leave for boxing day lunch the photos turned fuzzy.

Where has three years gone?

So.. three years ago yesterday this happened……..

400210_10150526818511695_1565766116_n

Prepping for that day is what got me heavily into crafts and sewing. To celebrate we had a quiet day to ourselves and as the weather behaved for once went down to one of my favourite Cornish spots for a walk- Godrevy. Armed with binoculars and camera we saw some lovely Sparrowhawks on the hunt, sparrows, robins and my personal favourite SEALS and there were a few pups too on the cove.

P1110165

Sadly it was rather windy on the cliff so my photos didn’t turn out spectactular.. to give you an idea of how high we were up this is on 23x zoom towards the back of the beach/cove. If anyone would like to learn more about seals or Cornish grey seals this website is the best place πŸ™‚ There is also the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek.

P1110292

To round it off we had fish and chips and even cheesecake… well technically I had cheesecake Matthew got a chocolatey thing.

Then back home where I even managed some sewing (epp of course) watching tv and chatting. Good job too as I have these minis to finish…

P1110355A Jane Austen inspired one… going for P and P and I might be slightly crazy as going to attempt to embroider that large quote!

P1110356A riot of colour this one is- it’s from the Little Quilts book “Fans of May”.

P1110353The day after I submitted my quilt for the Westcountry Quilt Show I started prepping this……. it’s for the IG Mini Swap and my partner doesn’t give much away! Modern, hexies and a lot of teal/blue. In the corner is some prep work for some ornaments….. it might be the only christmas decs I’ll get round to doing!

What is everyone up to this week? I’m heading up to Bristol for the quilt show and Fiona Pullen’s book launch party in Exeter tomorrow. Sunday I’m hoping to head up to Cowslip Workshops for their fayre then it’s back to work on Monday.

WIP Wednesday.. still a little slow

Ok… there’s two things I have a deadline of next monday for and I’m hoping admitting it will give me the extra kick/speed to get to where I need to be!

First up… the quilt that’s being entered into the West Country Quilt Show. I decided to redo the middle (hedgehog) as I really didn’t like the orange/white bits… it worked fine in my head….

P1110150

A few more grey flurry border bits to finish then to fill it out with something brown and then onto the background… it will get done. Then it’s just the question of handquilting it… I’ve invested in some perle threads.

The other thing on my list is for the Liberty of London Swap from IG. Here is where I am currently……..

P1110143

Two wonky stars.. that may or may not be a sewing machine cover. I’m toying with the idea of adding a pocket to it so it can also be a mat when not in use. And some more bits up my sleeve to do.

WIP Wednesday…. busy busy busy

Eek wednesday already?? I’m losing track but here’s a peek of what I’m currently working on…….

P1110066

The Harper Quilt… for my almost six month old niece and the way it is going seriously tempted to keep it for myself! The hourglasses not sure now whether will suit it… plan was for it to be in the center of the filler blocks.

P1110069

Irish Chain for Farryn… the aqua background I’m still trying to love… think I’m mostly a white/snow kinda girl!

P1110070

Ollie’s Playmat- my nephew is just over a week and half old already! And ever so cute πŸ™‚ Sea themed playmat for him with his name pieced on the back.

What is everyone working on? Linking up with…..
