Finish-A-Long 2017: Quarter One

Charm About You

I can’t almost believe it is 2017 let alone the start of a new Finish-A-Long year 🙂 I’m hoping to actually get on more with stuff this year as I’m trying to be more organised and use my planner! It’s just a shame my organisational skills does not extend to taking photos during the day light! Without further ado here is what I’ve decided from my lists to enter this quarter…

wp-1483463815603.jpg

  1. Christmas Tablecloth… yes the “C” word but I am intended to do something every month or two and first up is to finish the handquilting and binding on this. Soo close! imag0401.jpg
  2. Scarf… I picked this up in Trago last week and thought it be a pretty scarf and to break me in on my new overlocker! If anyone has any overlocker tips or projects let me know  🙂2016-04-10-17.21.30.jpg.jpeg
  3. Noah’s Ark Embroidery… yes this is still here and hardly any progress. one day! imag0403.jpg
  4. Wonky Stars Quilt… I had meant to give this as a christmas present.. but think it be a make you smile gift instead! imag0402.jpg
  5. Gnome Place Like Home Cross Stitch… erm I think I intended this to be a gift for Christmas 2015 imag0400.jpg
  6. South West Modern Quilt Guild Lanyard for the swap at the first meeting! imag0406.jpg
  7. Dinosaur Cushion… the last cushion I made Matthew for his chair has been squished six ways to sunday and long overdue for another! imag0395_1.jpg
  8. Knitted animal hat… I must be brave. I must be brave and jump in on this! imag0404.jpg
  9. Lacy Zip Pouch.. just needs the zip attaching and the final stitchdown.

So that’s it… I think manageable for this quarter right? Of course I have more things working on some secret, some now and some impulse.

What are you working on/hoping to do? I’m enjoying the last of my sunday before Sherlock pops on as it’s back to work tomorrow after a two week break. (Where did that time go?!)

Christmas Wistfulness

It’s that time when everything starts going back to normal… our decorations came down yesterday and suddenly there is space again. Looking back over the period it has been a good Christmas!

I may not have done everything I wanted to but part of my determination to be better organised I’ve written a list for next year and will be ticking something off every month or so… starting with finishing hand quilting and binding this tablecloth that I did finished piecing enough to use!

wp-1483463815603.jpgIt’s my own cobbled together design and I love it (but then who isn’t partial to stars!). I’ve done approx 2/3 of the quilting so far in around watching Gilmore Girls etc.

I’ve been lucky enough to be spoiled with gifts that is so me! Just look at all this…books and handmade goodies including that gorgeous “All I want for Christmas is Books” by the talented Jen over at Miss Bohemia. My friend Gill even surprised with a mini present quilt that promptly went on the lil bookcase to shine 🙂

wp-1483463774798.jpgwp-1483463763703.jpg

I did manage to make a few gifts, FOUR quilts (more on that soon), some stitchy pies and this cute Christmas penguin cross stitch.

For me though.. family makes the day extra special. This card is from my five year old nephew and I thought it looks like a villain from Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles (he is obsessed the way boys can be…) but nope it’s a mummy santa. And if you get the reference on the gift tag gold star to you my geeky friend 🙂

wp-1483463732259.jpgwp-1483463798132.jpg

I hope everyone has had a lovely break- today been a bit of a set back with car problems. Needed a jumpstart, a new battery and two new tyres it’s a good job I also have this week off week! Especially since I can play with my new overlocker…… If anyone has any tips or simple projects I would appreciate it!

Update and Plans for 2017

Ok.. here we are again and it’s been awhile. No matter what my intentions are blogging seems to fall by the wayside lately.

It may not seem like it but I have done stuff… quilts and gifts with a lot of cross stitch in between! I shall have to beg for photos to show them off to you (soon).

I always end up updating by book list this time of year and am quite amazed, 2015 I read 58 books. This year… 132! Although to be fair I can put a lot of that down to the Kindle I received for my birthday.

So… what’s on the agenda for 2017?

planner

For starters I’m breaking open this Kikki K Vanskapp Planner I’ve had for awhile now and actually using it. The only downside is I got the large version so can’t carry it around with me… But I have a lot going on next yearso I need be more organised!

Groups/Functions:

South West Modern Quilt Guild: This is a new guild starting in a couple of weeks (so excited). With monthly meetings and lots going on it should be a lot of fun! The only downside is that it will involve a bit of travel as it’s in Wellington (Somerset)and I’m coming from Cornwall… If anyone is interested there are still some spaces left just hop on over to the Instagram account here.

South West Stitchers: I’ll still be going along to this in the new place in Honiton although 2 of the 3 meetings clash with the guild.

Supernatural Convention (non craft related): The only meeting of the MQG I’ll miss as both myself and sister are heading up to Blackpool for this in May (eeek!!!). It’s also over my birthday so hopefully be a good time 🙂 For those who are thinking wtf it’s Supernatural the tv show…

Simply Solids Retreat: waiting on dates but fingers crossed!

Craft Related:

As I like to dabble in a lot… I’ve decided this year will be more selfish crafting again especially since I want to crack crochet/knitting! I’ve purposedly ignored all new swaps and Stitch/Quilt Alongs as I’ve not even finished the ones started this year yet….

  • Finished 2016 Pumpkin Sampler Cross Stitch (so close working on the last 2 months)
  • 2016 Lucy Boston EPP quilt by SewandQuilt (embarrassingly still in Month 1!)
  • Harry Potter Cushion Cross Stitch Sampler (am somewhere in month 6…)
  • Carolyn Friedlander Simply Solids Collection Quilt (erm not even looked at…)
  • SewSampler QAL organised by the Sewing Directory (half way through)

Things in general…

  • Wonky Star Cat Quilt for a friend
  • Get this curved sailboat quilt out of my head and onto fabric (been so long lost the original template
  • Cinderella Cross Stitch (got the pattern/supplies just need to start)
  • Chunky Cross Stitch Cushions- finish the tea one and start hedgehog
  • Dinosaur Quilt and Cushion for Matthew
  • Liberty and AGF Solid QST quilt
  • Northern Lights Quilt for me (really really need a quilt for me I don’t have one! unless 2 tablecloths count…)
  • Fox Rug Kit- to try

Life in general…

  • Get back into a bi-weekly blogging habit
  • Improve on my healthy lifestyle and experimenting in kitchen (refined sugar free and slowly less gluten/grains and incorporate fitness into morning routine)
  • Share new recipes
  • Actually use the Overlocker bought this week 🙂
  • Use my Patisserie Mixer at least once a month…
  • Practice new crafts (knitting/crochet etc)
  • Design and distribute own patterns
  • Grow my little business (finally)
  • Make sure keep time to myself… reading… games etc
  • Keep in touch and strengthen friendships whereever people may be

I think that’s enough of my waffle! Happy New Year everyone and looking forward to seeing your goals. Today I’m linking up with quiltingjetgirl and #2017 planning party.

FAL Q4 2016

Well… this is embarrassing. I’ve not been around so long that my last post was previously “hoping to finish” for the last FAL quarter 😮 I had finished one thing on that list but forgot to show…

If you follow me on Instagram you probably seen that since I’ve been on the Simply Solids Retreat (more on that soon!) I’ve been sewing up a storm and since then currently working on my sixth top being pieced. Pieced not quilted mind!

Now apologies for my ultra long list but taking advantage of my productivity levels 🙂

p11304471. Disney Cars Quilt for Oliver- I actually cut this out today and hoping finish piecing too! The quilt I finished in August was for his birthday and he loves it so much it’s not gone for a wash yet hence the need for a second… and then maybe a third. He’s only two but he loves them 🙂

p11304492. Wonky Stars Quilt- birthday present

p11304513. Lullaby/Essex Linen QST quilt- no idea who for yet.. but I needed use the rest of the charms up!

p11304554. Northern Lights Quilt for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Look seals! I don’t have a quilt of my own yet can you believe that??!! This is as far as I got thinking pairing with purples and precious DS fabrics to make a starry type pattern

p11304565. Hexie Dinosaur Quilt! Got to get a move on as I want to give this to Matthew for christmas. The hexie thing is a private joke between us… apparently I’m obsessed and they’re everyone and that also I believe in another age hence the need for a quilt…

p11304546-8: CHRISTMAS STUFF. More than 3 things here… but isn’t the Violet Craft bundle on the right soo pretty? Thinking turning into placemats and a table centrepieced matched with… a dark grey essex linen. Also here are plans for stockings for my sister, nephew and me! As well as bunting… (yes the dreaded b word)

p11304539. Liberty QST quilt- since I broke into my liberty stash on retreat I have been a bit ruthless…. Waiting to go to the West Country Quilt Show to stack up on more liberty for this. Teamed with Pure Elements Snow I’m hoping it’ll look gorgeous!

2016-04-10-17.21.30.jpg.jpeg10. Noah’s Ark Embroidery

2016-04-14-15.03.37.jpg.jpeg11-15- Quilting various things including this table cloth and the Irish Chain quilt that has been on my FAL list for like forever!

16- The Winter Sparkle ATC for the Veryberryhandmade swap 🙂

I also want to do stitchy pies, maker totes and a supernatural themed satchel but think I have a lot to be getting on with!

Who else is creating stuff for christmas? Linking up…

1930s Farmer’s Wife QAL: Mrs Smith (Block 72)

(Or the block that almost did not make it…)

Hi! I’m back again in Kerry’s 1930s Farmer’s Wife QAL and ready to show you Block 72: Mrs Smith! When I first chose this block I was drawn to the star it was only when I went to piece it awhile back I realised how many pieces was within the construction ouch! That being said I don’t think it’s looking too bad……

FW 1930s 72 Mrs Smith (2)When I dug it out this weekend for photos in the sun (hello downpour of rain!) I didn’t like it in comparison with my other blocks and almost redid it… but the fabrics are just too cute.

Sorry no photos on it’s own as with my purple mat it really washed the block out! This block is machined pieced still I’ve not been brave enough to try either handpiecing or EPP on one of these! It’s a bit different from my other blocks but hoping with the mix of 30s solids and style fabrics it’ll work in the end

FW 1930s 72 Mrs Smith (1)

I always love reading the letters that go with the block and Mrs Smith is no exception, it evokes a sense of comfort, happiness and friendship.

If you are on Instagram please stop by I can be found @quirkyhannah and you can see many more gorgeous blocks in the hashtags #fw1930sqal

Hoping to catch up some more soon and lay them out properly! How is everyone else doing?

Finish A Long- 2016- Quarter Two!

Oh yup it’s that time again to link up. Looking at my list last quarter I actually did better than I thought even if I didn’t show many of them.. Out of my main list of 7 I actually finished 5!! Practically a new record for me!

And for the first time in what feels like ever I’m completely swap/bee free just waiting for my Supernatural swap to arrive and a round robin that seems “lost” in the post. Seriously three months to cross the atlantic 😦 With that in mind there’s going to be a lot more “me” sewing and gifts yay!

So… what’s on the list this time?

2016-04-14-15.00.50.jpg.jpeg1. Quilt for Oliver- lovely the theme! Just trying to decide on what solid to co-ordinate on the border with…

2016-04-14-15.03.37.jpg.jpeg2-3. Beach quilt I pieced in summer 2012 and the christmas tablecloth I started in December

Milk, Flower and Sugar Hexagons EPP4. Milk, Flour and Sugar baby quilt

P11008855. Starry Irish Chain Quilt

P11008086. An item of clothing for me!

image

7. This Noah Ark embroidery for a canvas

8. Also some stitchy pies and other odds and ends for gifts.

What are you working on/linking up?

Decisions… decisions… and a finish!

Just whirling in quickly to sneak in another finish from my FAL 2016 Q1 List!

2016-04-07-07.15.06.jpg.jpegA Cheer bear! And just in time for my niece 2nd birthday on Monday! This is actually a kit meant for a five year but that tummy… let’s just say a lot of rude words was said and not entirely sure it’s going to last…

I also got to get a quilt finish to gift but am completely stuck…. do I go with any of the below or something completely new??

2016-04-07-07.16.35.jpg.jpegThis beast is 84″ quilted, backed with fleece and only awaiting binding. But it’s HUGE and a little heavy. I was luckily enough to test Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts design for this.

2016-04-07-07.20.36.jpg.jpegThen there’s this! A starry winnie the pooh but it’s only approx 38″ square at the moment and perhaps a little boyish? Not sure what else to add it to it…

2016-04-07-07.19.01.jpg.jpegLastly.. it’s the Harper quilt! Measuring approx 44″ square, it needs a kinda another border but maybe to lengthen it out top and bottom 2 rows of squares.

Argh whatever I got to crack on soon…. (apologies for photos, early morning not much room!)

Thimble Blossoms Mini Swap

Phew that’s another swap ticked off my list! Slowly but surely as my swap commitments are going down my sewjo is coming back 🙂 I have one main swap left and a couple of bee blocks and looking forward to non swap crafting properly soon!

2016-02-16 17.59.04

In the meantime this is my mini in the Instagram Thimbleblossoms Swap. I had intended to do Piccadilly Circus but it seemed everyone was doing that! In the end I chose Vintage Tulips. Hopefully it will be liked…

2016-02-16 18.01.07

As an extra I chose a project from the 50 Fat Quarter Makes book- this lil basket- it’s the second smallest in the pattern but you can see how roomy it is! And it did not take long to come together at all.  I’ve also spoiled my partner by including the lil fox hoop and some fabric.

Now onto a cross stich project! (surprise surprise!) Annnd it’s another thing ticked off my FAL 2016 list 🙂

Farmer’s Wife QAL: Golda

Hello! So.. it’s my week in the Farmer’s Wife QAL bloghop (hosted by Kerry) and I’m here to show you block 38 Golda!

P1130345-001As soon as I saw this block I loved it! There are a lot of pieces but surprisingly it came together really quickly and almost perfect. It took me a long time to decide on fabric and in the end I steered away from the 30s pastels as in my other blocks and went for DS (Denyse Schmidt). Here’s hoping it will fit in the overall quilt 🙂 Although my choices later have been a bit bolder from my collection…

The letter for this block is “So Quiet and Peaceful”, basically it’s a story about a family who moved from their farm to the city. Day to day life become easier, they had money and playtime. Then the depression hit, jobs were cut, wages went down, city life became unsupportable so they went back home- to the farm and wondered why they ever let. The simplest of messages conveyed.

With everything that’s been happening I’m not completely up to date with the QAL but when I work on the blocks I find pairs are best! Choose fabrics in pairs, prep in pairs and sew in pairs. The majority of mine are machine sewn as foundation piecing is not my favourite! A couple are in pieces as attempting hand piecing but not finished those yet…. oops!

I rotary cut all my pieces and I guess my main tip to those is a 28mm rotary cutter- it’s so much more easier on those little pieces! I tend to cut the fabric slightly bigger than the pattern and stack in 4s, then I add a bit of double sided tape to the back of the pattern and lay it on top of the fabric to cut. I find it’s minimalises cutting errors for me 🙂

P1130336-001As I work in pairs- block 37 Georgia is keeping Golda company. I couldn’t resist using the red DS print again- hoping this might lead to a more cohesive quilt.

P1130340-001And… here we go a choice offering of some of my blocks and the style.. I’m finding that the fabric choices are like picking out my mood at the time. The pastelly ones are from when all I wanted is to be left alone and some quiet 🙂 Now it’s bright, bold and raring to go.

How is everyone getting on with theirs?

Goals- next 3 months (aka the Finishalong post)

So.. it’s safe to say that it’s a bit of an understatement I was appalling bad at finishing things last year or even sticking to my list!

2016 FAL

Starting off with swap commitments…

  1. Thimbleblossoms Mini Quilt Swap- I’m making this beauty 🙂
  2. Supernatural Craft Swap- a pocket pouch with devils trap embroidery, a Castiel and Dean cross stitch and something that’s a bit of a surprise!
  3. Damnbigheroes (a Firefly swap)Jayne Cross StitchSince the above photo, a quote has been added just need some more finishing touches then it’s on to a word embroidery (wait and see) and something with special firefly fabric 🙂
  4. Yup still this quilt for my niece who turns two in April….. just gotta add a border, baste, quilt and bind.P1110066
  5. Care Bear for my neice
  6. Gnome Cross Stitch for a birthday early Feb
  7. Milk, Flour and Sugar baby quiltMilk, Flower and Sugar Hexagons EPPI do have a lot more on my list too, like the Farmers Wife 1930s QAL, Geeky Stitching Club, the Clouds Factory Harry Potter Sampler QAL, the Frosted Pumpkin 2015, AND 2016 stitcheries etc etc. Guess I better get a move on!
