Little Quilts Swap

So.. a few months ago Sarah Fielke organised a mini quilt swap from the book she cowrote with Amy Lobsiger. I couldn’t resist and signed up!

My partner liked colour and so after a bit of thought I decided on the Fans of May pattern from the book and eventually ended up with this…..

Little Quilts Fans of May FMQ (1)It is one of my favourite quilts from last year and at times it was tough- who knew that ric rac melts and I dislike how much of a mess woolen fabric leaves! I was also naughty and deviated from the pattern slightly by adding buttons to the fans but I thought it looked better and helped to hide the odd foundation piecing mistake!

Little Quilts Fans of May FMQ (2) Little Quilts Fans of May FMQ (3)After doing Sarah’s class at the West Country Quilt Show I practiced my FMQ on the border and the basket gift.Long way to go yet fmq wise but at least it’s a step in the right direction!

It’s also one thing ticked off my FAL Q4 list too!

Little QuiltsThis is what I received from my partner isn’t it lovely? I’ve been oohing and aahing over the pattern in that book and the little pouch and extras are cute!

Unfortunately I don’t think my partner had much experience with foundation piecing before as there are a few mishaps- the points are quite far away meeting up and there’s an exposed seam.I’ve done a fair bit of foundation piecing this week so will share those projects and tips/comments on the technique soon.

But I do love the fabric and am grateful she put all the effort into making this after all that’s what counts and trying new things! But… what to do with it? What do others do with mini quilts if they aren’t on the wall?

2015 Sewing Goals

So.. as 2014 is drawing to a close it’s time to think about aims for next year and inspired by Kerry over at Pennydog here’s my list of sewing goals for 2015!

P1110456

1. Conquer precut fear- above is my current collection of precuts. 4 Layer Cakes, 3 Jelly Rolls and 13 Charm Packs. I did have more but I either gave or destashed some… They are pretty to look at butI hate the idea of wasting them on random things so they have just stayed in the drawer. I need to design patterns and use these up.

P11104502. Attempt more dressmaking- last year I did made a Ginger skirt, cut out a flora dress and modified the pattern for the Plaintain tunic but that’s it…. I really need to make the use of these patterns then I can get more πŸ˜‰

3. Write/publish patterns- been thinking about this for a good while.. as it could help fund my fabric obsession and be a good way to get these ideas out of my head on to paper and actually made!

4. Try new quilting techniques- I really want to do a pixel quilt or applique art quilts to do with seals!

5. Get a good in the next FOQ entry- of course this means I’ll also need to design and make something for it too πŸ™‚

P1110446In addition this is some of what is hanging on the back of my chair pieced quilts in various stages…. I really ought to get a move on and finish these!

P1110448And……….. some present additions this month πŸ™‚

Is everyone managing to sew or partake in the sales? Don’t forget if you want to win some of Kerry’s fabric in the goal linkup you only have three more days πŸ™‚

Q4- The Finish A Long

Eek.. it’s that time again to come up withΒ  a Finish Along list and it’s the last one of 2014! Where has the time gone?? This week especially has been full of ups and downs as I’m still suffering from a silly virus and headaches which when combined with the day job of computers has completely knocked me out.

But I’ve managed to finish some embroidery last night and as I had nothing prepped to sew to the end of Strictly I made my list… and kinda wished I hadn’t! It’s scary even for me and most of it is stuff I have to do. I might have actually taken on too much but we will see. I am so looking forward to my two weeks off in November where I can knock off a few of these “C” makes.

P1110119

1. Woodland Critters Quilt- embroidery, EPP and handquilted! I’m new to embroidery really but it’s becoming a bit of an additction and I like to think I’m improving. The three there took me allllllll week and I’m so tempted to redo the owl and hedgehog but must resist. This has got to be finished by the end of the month…. as it’s being entered into the West Country Quilt Show.

2-4. The “Harper” Quilt, Oliver’s Playmat and Farry’s Quilt as seen here. Yup not much further on those…

P1110121 P1110120

5. IG Mini Quilt Swap- I’m planning to use the teals/blues in top photo along with triangles and hexagons.

6. Little Quilts Swap- The Month of May Mini in top photo with squares and scalloped edges

7. Liberty of London Swap- some grey linen with rainbow liberty for a sewing machine cover and a teeny mini

8. From the Sew Cute to Cuddle book- planning a dragon (for nephew 1), a monkey for Nephew 2 and an owl for my niece.

P1110123

9. Finish my “C” inspired mini wallhanging with the Lilipopo girl embroidery. The girl is done I just have some plans to add a tree and border/quilt it.

10. Stocking for Nephew 2- with his name embroidered on top in linen.

11. Hexie Trees Christmas Table Runner thing.

P1110122

12. I still have these to do- some Sew Together bags as thank you gifts..

I also have this 30s repro mini to finish hand quilting. As well as sort out my “For the Love of Jane” Swap, “Handmade Ornaments” Swap a special Cat Quilt for a friend’s birthday, a bag or two… The list continues but all these will be “bonus” projects as I think I do have more than enough to be getting on with!

Let’s hope I feel ok this week… although I do have a work trip out of County for Pensions Reform 2015 Seminar…. the joys of the day job.

Phew I’ll see you sometime right?! Linking up with Katy over at The Littlest Thistle.

A mini English Paper Pieced wallhanging.. slowly handquilting this one πŸ™‚

P1110104

A christmas project for me! A wallhanging eventually.. I’m embroidery the girl then hoping to team with hexagons and machine pieced patchwork. The pattern is by Lilipopo. Isn’t she adorable?

What is everyone else up to this week? Linking up with WIP Wednesday.

Bee Blocks!

Phew I knew July was going to be a busy month between finishing my festival of quilts submission and deadlines at work but it ran on until august.. then September. I finally found and opened all the bee post I received for twoΒ  Flickr bees i was “Queen” in July today.

First up…. I chose 30s repros as my theme for the I Love Lucy Bee- aren’t they lovely?

P1110094

The other bee… is Fat Stash Bee and I chose loosely cat themed, granny squares and cat blocks… isn’t everyone creative! The aim is to turn this into a quilt for a friend….P1110095 P1110096 P1110097

Can you tell my favourites?? Seriously love Nikki’s Foundation Pieced Cat and the applique ones πŸ™‚

I’m really not loving Flickr at the moment.. since the app update I can’t access group discussions or Flickr mail! Considering I spend my working week on the computer (with two screens) I really can’t face going on it at home nor can my poor phone cope with the internet version…

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend.

WIP Wednesday…. busy busy busy

Eek wednesday already?? I’m losing track but here’s a peek of what I’m currently working on…….

P1110066

The Harper Quilt… for my almost six month old niece and the way it is going seriously tempted to keep it for myself! The hourglasses not sure now whether will suit it… plan was for it to be in the center of the filler blocks.

P1110069

Irish Chain for Farryn… the aqua background I’m still trying to love… think I’m mostly a white/snow kinda girl!

P1110070

Ollie’s Playmat- my nephew is just over a week and half old already! And ever so cute πŸ™‚ Sea themed playmat for him with his name pieced on the back.

What is everyone working on? Linking up with…..

Festival of Quilts

Well I’ve been back four days now it’s time I wrote something about my time in the Midlands and at Festival of Quilts! Firstly this is me and my entry…..

P1100921Overall I like it… it’s just the finishing touches that let it down and in the interests of transparency and future record…. my judge’s comments were much better than expected! True some of that could have been avoided if I didn’t left it to the last minute to decide…

P1110054

I did manage to come away with some goodies from the trade stalls and then at the Fabric Guild in Leicester… 10448855_831060193580357_1761943350_n 10584774_570055229787503_633954499_n

Now on to the quilts and in no particular order these are some of my favourites! Unfortunately I forgot to photo pretty much most of the credits so I do apologise hopefully you be able to find out or let me know πŸ™‚

My photography isn’t too great in these so I must have been pretty distracted!

P1110046Love everything about this the colours, hexies and stars.P1110028Right back to my childhood and memories of playing.. how cool is this?!

“Cats with Hattitudes” P1110003 P1110005-001

At the moment I’m really loving this type of work, the above harbour one reminds me of some art I recently saw down St Ives.

Β  P1100936P1110047 P1100940

Β So now you guess what caught me eye… there was loads more I loved but either forgot to photo or too many people in the way. Did anyone else go and have fun?

I also popped by the new Modern branch of the Quilters Guild and signed up. Sadly there’s not too much of a Cornish quilting presence so think might have to change that…. anybody interested?

Billy Bass (PennyDog’s Mini)

Well I’m still recovering from my time away in the Midlands catching up with a few people, Festival of Quilts and my first foray into the Fabric Guild. Not unpacked yet or sorted my photos so more on that later in the week….

Have you all met Kerry from PennyDog yet? If you haven’t pop on over to her blog here and prepare to be amazed by her designs and creativity.Β  She is definitely one of my favourite inspirational people and I mean really look at this Billy Bass…. It takes me right back to when the original craze happened.

Photo Credit: Kerry Wilkinson of PennyDog

If you pop over to her post here you can hear the music too! I was lucky enough to see this in person and it is ingenious.

Now why am I telling you all about Billy?? Kerry has made the Top 16 in the Sewvivor competition and Billy Bass is her entry for Round 1 Nautical theme. At the moment there is a public vote open to vote for the favourites out of the 16 but it is open from yesterday (Monday) to tomorrow (Wednesday) so pop on over here to see what the fuss is about and vote πŸ˜‰

The winners will be announced next week but there is a sewvivor sewalong happening too where you can create to the themes each time and have a chance to win a prize more info on the bottom of this post πŸ™‚ I’m hoping to grab more sleep, tidy my space, unpack and get started on a little something to enter in time but for now I’ll leave you with an embroidered fish I manage to freehand this morning….

Finally I can breathe..

… just a little bit! The past couple of weeks have been a little insane with one week not very well at all and having to contend with payroll stuff for work then finishing off a pattern test and… my Illusions Quilt. Which I had a deadline for it to be received by Friday 25th.

But I did it… usually I take forever to finish a project and not often try anything completely new on something bigger than a block. Things I learnt throughout the Illusions Quilt process……

1) Do not dither over a design for like forever.

2) Four days before you need to post it is not the best time to change your mind and completely rip out most of your work with a view to starting again. Especially since it was a critical period workwise

3) Do not leave it til almost the last couple of weeks to get it done…

4) Do not the night before decide to practice free motion quilting on it… (just the corners mind!)

5) I can do y seams and curves plus they are addictive πŸ™‚

P1100907

I must admit that not once I felt stressed or had a panic attack even though few times it looked close to not being finished. I guess this is a side effect of my job of Payroll Officer comes in I’ve trained myself to be calm and just get on with it. As Richard Cypher from the Sword of Truth series say “think of the solution and not the problem” Something I try to keep in mind.. mostly.

Anyway……. ten minutes before we left to post it I finished the hanging sleeve (my first so fingers crossed it’s not too wonky!) but here are the rubbishy photos. Just don’t look too close… the piecing… the quilting awful and the bottom right corner gah it’s all curvy and doesn’t hang straight down. Of course that doesn’t matter due to the wonky sleeve right?! One thing I did get right the fabric choices!

P1100908

Technically this is my first finish of Q3 (go me!) for the Finish Along 2014 think when/if I get it back I do a proper post on it with better photos… I

In the meantime anyone going to Festival of Quilts? I’m there on the thursday and friday. One quilt I’m espeically looking forward to seeing in person is Mr Bowie of Kerry’s creation. (Massive thanks to Kerry without which the above design wouldn’t have been possible as easily πŸ™‚ )

And…. it’s one thing ticked off my FAL Q3 list πŸ™‚

Happy Sunday! I’m off to try and do something a bit slower..

Finish Along Quarter 3 – My Goals.

It’s that time again to look at sewing goals for the next quarter of the finish a long and boy do I have a big list this time! Let’s hope I do much better than my previous attempts eh πŸ˜‰ Considering that I only maybe finish one thing from the list but start and finish more stuff.

Right first up my most immediate concern……

P1100900

My “Illusions” Quilt. I was hoping to get it finished piecing today but those pesky y seams are being time consuming! Yup that is a penny there for size… One of my issues is that on the last bit of the seam it puckers slightly so I’m going to have to add an extra step in.

Hopefully by mid week it be ready to start quilting which ideally needs to be finished by the end of next sunday….

P1100901

Hazel the Hedgehog quilt! I’m pattern testing for Oh Fransson and this little guy is addictive! Not doing too bad almost another five hedgies piececd which means 3 more, sashing and quilting. Ideally this week…

P1100891

Adding the seal toy back on the list with the new addition of the cat! My nephew turns 3 in August and loves Jess from Postman Pat so thought do him a little Jess πŸ™‚ As well as… a Postman Pat quilt or something made out of fabric. What does a 3 year old need really??!

P1100885

Oh dear… the Irish Chain still. Not much more than last week I’m sorry little adventurer it is on it’s way just slightly delayed.

917420_866058160074655_1782845897_ne8aa9e0cb28911e3a90412310a334dbf_8

My vintage sheets and quilty barns needs rebasting and quilting…

P1100904 P1100903

Two Thimble Blossom Minis need finishing… the Rise and Shine (top one) I completely mucked up so it’s lounging in my desk drawer. I take it out maybe do one bit and back in it goes! It is very important to test one block first and not go through and do them all…

P1100905 P1100902 P1100892Fun bits! Want to do my Country Girls granny square quilt, some austen/sherlock minis, a Fox wallhanging, a sewing machine cover and… clothes!!

Plus this list wouldn’t be complete without some EPP… my nursery hexie quilt needs a border before quilting. Hexie tablecloth.. chrysanthemum tablecentre pieces plus want to start a 30s repro double wedding ring quilt.

Think I’m going to get bored? What’s the bet I’m going to do other stuff than what’s here!

Linking up with Katy over at the Littlest Thistle.
