Farmer’s Wife QAL: Week 16 Eva and Fanny

The Farmer’s Wife Quilt-A-Long hosted by Kerry of Verykerryberry is back after Christmas break and it’s week 16. I’m going to apologise for my photos, every time I went to try it literally poured down.

Here’s Block 31. Eva

P1130328-001I quite like this block and soft colours, I tried so hard to ensure it all blends in with the background pattern. The squares were tiny but manageable.

Block 22. Fanny

P1130326-001I liked the style of this but not sure on my combination, when I was pulling choices it seemed to work but now I wished I switched combinations around in a few places.

Both blocks I machined pieced but this week I’m actually going to try handpiecing Block 34… scary. It be interesting to see how long it takes and what it looks like!

How is everyone getting on with their blocks?

Stitching Secret Santa

A couple months ago Sheila (Sewchet) had this amazing idea to hold a secret santa with a max limit of Β£10 but we can throw in whatever goodies we like to go with it!

Mine went off to Nikki and as she was getting into dressmaking and loved freestyle embroidery I included the Colette Ginger skirt pattern, some gorgeous woolfelt I obtained from Sew and Quilt, along with a notebook and a ruffly scarf I’ve knitted (one of my very few knitted accomplishments probably because it is so easy! To see the goodies check out Nikki’s post here. I felt really bad about not including something sewn but with everything happening I kept putting it off and if I waited it would have got there after christmas! However I think something might be making it’s way pretty soon….

My parcel was unfortunately delayed in the post but opening it was a really good new year present and well worth the wait! Thanks so much Lucie!! To see Lucie’s post about what she put together and why it’s all here πŸ™‚

P1130322-001

A lovely owl cushion, a liberty needlebook, hanging hearts, gorgeous crochet goodies and isn’t that frog amazing?

P1130323Crochet is on my list to practice and get better at (along with knitting!) so am in awe of this little set, a pin cushion and measuring tape.

The closeup of mr frog is really blurry so you have to make do with the above! I didn’t realise there was pins in the pin cushion so when I picked it up jabbed myself something proper.

Really pleased with how this swap went and will be looking out for more Sheila does.

Farmer’s Wife QAL Week 10: Carrie and Cat

So…. a few posts back you might remember that I’m going to be a guest blogger in the Farmer’s Wife 1930s QAL hosted by Kerry of verykerryberry.

It was my intention to do the blocks each week but unfortunately I fell behind… however instead of manically trying to catch up I’m going to do the blocks allocated that week and try to do one (or two) that I have missed!

This week it’s Carrie and Cat (Blocks 21 and 22). When pulling fabric choices I definitely had a bit of a red/yellow theme going on.

Block 21: Carrie

P1130178

Block 22: Cat

P1130185

Cat is my favourite fabric combination out of the two it’s just a shame I had trouble with those pesky triangles! I should not try to sew without having my morning cup of tea first…..

I’m a little worried about how I’m going to sash my blocks when finished (random middle of the night thought) as I’m just picking combos suited to the block as/when do them. But thinking might either a grey or a dotty low volume print… as long as I stay away from using fabrics with a mainly white background in. Hmm.

How is everyone else getting on with their blocks? Most of the fabrics featured above came from Jessie’s shop Sew and Quilt in a specially curated bundle for the QAL.

Quick Update….

Things have been a little busy (and slow or let’s be honest non existent!) here but I’m still around πŸ™‚ I think I’m back on track emotionally and task wise after the upheaval of the past few months (let’s just say two family funerals and house problems in addition normal worky stress).

Sewing became a chore for awhile especially since it was mostly finishing for swaps… but some time out and trying a new craft seemed to have done the trick. Meet my new obsession….

2015-11-11 09.23.52

And I’m not just talking about Dean Winchester! Although if you insist…………… πŸ˜‰

Got a few things to show off soon including a yummy almond butter cookie recipe. And I’ve actually been sewing for me! Catching up on my Farmer Wife Blocks and working on a christmassy tablecloth. I’m going to have to start on some presents soon but not today!

Hope everyone’s weekend plans going just as well.

The Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler QAL

Normally I’m not a fan of sampler quilts but there is something about the Farmer’s Wife blocks that just grabs me and since I heard there was a 1930s out well that was it!

FW4Anyone who is a regular reader will know I love to use (ok mostly hoard) 1930s reproduction fabric and this book is the perfect excuse to showcase some of them.

Especially since Kerry is hosting a year long quilt along with the aim of 2 blocks a week (manageable right?!). There’s guest bloggers and lots of tips/inspiration to help you on your way. All sorts will be covered including foundation piecing and english paper piecing. So how can anyone refuse?

FW Blogger List

The above links to Kerry’s intro post detailing guest bloggers and details and yes that is me there! How exciting I feel very privileged to be able to contribute a block or two over the next 12 months.

Don’t worry if you think you are missing out there is still time to grab the book and join in- officially the block posts starts on Monday 14th September with block 1 and 2. Some introductory posts are up though on fabric choices etc.

FW1I might have started already…………. since my new sewing room layout it is much easier and fun to match fabrics. (Jessie over at Sew and Quilt has the perfect 30s solids and repro themed bundles) I think Maize might be my new favourite solid (the one used in the right hand block above).

FW2I’m going to try and do the blocks in order… but some like the ones I’m blogging about I’m anxious to play with πŸ™‚

So… are you all fired up to join in? If you are on Instagram waves I’m here πŸ™‚ don’t forget to check out the hashtag #fw1930sqal to see some of the action.

My Sewing Space

So… I think finally my sewing space is a bit more organised to show you…. You might have seen this on my Instagram feed but it’s taken me awhile (most of the bank holiday weekend) to sort my quilting cottons…… I ran out of cards and space. In fact I dragged Matthew to Argos early on the sunday morningΒ just to get another bookcase. Stupidly I thought all of my quilt stuff would fit on one…. (let’s not mention the box full I have hidden)Sewing Room 4My cutting desk which I *try* to keep clear and inspirational πŸ™‚ The cross stitch was done by my amazing friend Donna of the characters from Firefly complete with quotes! I keep some of the magazines/books I’m working from on it complete with pens, notebook and my Paperchase planner.

Sewing Room

Next where I sew! My little baby the Brother Innovis 350SE still settling in πŸ™‚ Next to her is a to do list, more pens, a slightly overworked turtle pincushion, lots of thread and most importantly a place for a cup of tea.Sewing Room 2

On my walls are lots of mini quilts, as well as a Jane Austen quote calendar (from Jen of Miss Bohemia) and a wall planner.Sewing Room 3 Despite what you see I’m not the most organised person in the world… (unless you think organised chaos) but I’m trying! Hopefully I can sew a bit more regularly especially before work. I have so many ideas it’s starting to be a struggle converting them from my head…

Toodstool Pin Cushion (maybe)

I’m quite excited think today is my first link up to Le Challenge something is actually finished in time!

Wednesday I toddled up to St Austell to spend the day chatting and crafting with a friend there. We each had one small project to try- Liz came up with a felt bauble (as seen in the background) super easy and addictive! Will show more when I completed some more….

P1120008

Helen lent me her Cotton Floss book which has so many projects I want to try including this pin cushion. A couple of hours of choosing felt, embroidering, stitching and stuffing we both ended up with a toadstool πŸ™‚

Even though we both used the same pattern our toadstools came out different sizes!

Linking up with Le Challenge for this month’s theme of “wood” where you can most often find these πŸ™‚

Uk Mini Swap

So.. finally I’m posting about what I made and received in the UK Mini Swap hosted by Nina of Bossyoz over on Instagram.

I was more than nervous when I discovered my partner was none other than Nina herself! The pressure was on to get it right πŸ˜‰ I knew I wanted to do something with a nautical theme as being from Cornwall how could I not for someone who loves sailboats??

In the end I came up with something inspired by curves…

Curve Sail boat Mini Quilt

It was quite out of my comfort zone! With trying to make it random and appealing… but now I am most definitely in love with curves πŸ™‚ In case you’re wondering.. each curve square is 3″ finished.P1110920

I actually forgot to take a photo of my extras so nabbing this from Nina’s IG feed. I think she liked it πŸ™‚

After postie watching what feels like forever my mini finally turned up a few days ago….. with a lovely fabric basket, box of buttons, some oakshot and 2.5″ squares.

P1110949

Happy Sunday all! I think I might actually get to sew today.. how is everyone’s bank holiday plans going?
